Chat GPT Encryption Won't be Enough


ChatGPT has become a transformative tool for businesses, but for all its benefits, it introduces a significant privacy risk that even the most well-intentioned security measures may not fully address. While OpenAI is now working to enhance its enterprise offerings with newly announced features like encrypted chat, the underlying concerns about data confidentiality and security remain a critical issue for any company using the AI for internal work.

The Privacy Gap: Legal and Technical Realities

The core of the problem, as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has pointed out, is that conversations with ChatGPT lack the legal confidentiality afforded to professional interactions. Unlike doctor-patient or attorney-client privilege, your chats with an AI are not protected by the same legal safeguards. In a lawsuit or legal investigation, OpenAI could be compelled to turn over your company’s chat data. This poses a direct threat to the security of trade secrets, intellectual property, and proprietary information.

Furthermore, on consumer-facing versions, chats are not end-to-end encrypted like on platforms such as WhatsApp or Signal. While OpenAI employs encryption for data, this doesn't prevent the company itself or authorized personnel from potentially accessing the content. The chats can be stored for various purposes, including model improvement and safety monitoring, creating a continuous exposure risk for sensitive information.


Safeguarding Your Business: What You Can Do

While the privacy risks are real, they are not insurmountable. The first step for any business is to recognize that enterprise-grade solutions offer a higher level of protection. OpenAI's ChatGPT Enterprise and Team tiers, for example, have features that prevent your data from being used for model training and provide robust compliance controls.

Beyond that, here are key practices to mitigate the risk:

  • Establish a Clear Policy: Create a strict "acceptable use" policy for AI tools, outlining what kind of information can and cannot be shared.

  • Educate Employees: Train your staff on the privacy and security risks of using AI chatbots and the importance of not inputting any sensitive data.

  • Use Pseudonyms: When possible, remove any identifying details or use pseudonyms for individuals and projects to reduce the risk of inadvertent data exposure.

While the promise of encrypted chats is a step in the right direction, it is not a silver bullet for the privacy challenges of using AI for business.
